The UK government has rejected a proposal to impose a 5% levy on streaming services and maintain mandatory IP retention rules, as recommended by a parliamentary committee. Instead, the government is emphasising the benefits of a mixed production ecology that supports both international investment and local production. This was confirmed in a formal response published on 3 July. The government has also rejected other proposals from the committee, including tax relief and regulation of artificial intelligence, and has emphasised the importance of the local jobs and economic contributions of major productions such as “Barbie” and “Bridgerton”.
